This wonderful pair of lamp shades are from the estate of a 98-year old lady who was a decorator. They are a perfectly matched pair of Steuben Gold Aurene Iridescent Glass bell-shaped shades.
Steuben Glass founder Fredrick Carder's innovative experimentation with glassmaking techniques produced important results including iridescent surfaces like their well known "Aurene" glass, murky translucence and saturated colors. Aurene was the first great commercial glass with a golden iridescence whose name was taken from the Latin word for gold, aurum, and the last three letters of schene, a Middle English word for sheen.
These shades have the authentic silvery Steuben fleur-de-lis mark on the fitter rim pointing toward the inside of the shade and slightly blurred.
The fitter rims are 2 1/4", the shades are 5 1/4" tall and the bottom is 4 1/4" in diameter. They are in excellent condition with no chips or cracks . There is one light surface scratch on each, but are so small that they actually go unnoticed.
This stunning set has a wonderful gold iridescent finish and radiates blue, gold, teal, and silver. It is quite amazing to find a pair of these early 1900s shades in such excellent condition.
