Marked Zilpla 90, indicative of the 90% silver content, this silver or silverplate cover originated from the Netherlands. The design in repousse appears to be an outside scene of perhaps a mining site or maybe even a blacksmith's shop at the end of the day. The highly embossed scene shows several men gathered around a barrel. There is a pick ax to one side. One gentleman appears to be entertaining the crew-- playing a fiddle or violin. A watchful dog is laying at their feet. I have seen this relief design interpreted as a Pub Scene but I'm inclined to disagree. The match box case or holder is a larger one than many, made to hold a kitchen size box of matches. I have left the old paper match box with it which is quite old and rather damaged. The paper match box inside is marked from the "Nederlands" and offers a scenic view of a Dutch windmill. There are three open sides to the silver cover, in order to slide the box in and out and also have access to strike the match. The back and one side have a hammered look. The cover is in Very Nice Condition with a few scuff marks on the bottom ( or back). The size measures 4 1/2" long by 2 1/4" wide and 1 1/4" deep. A nice addition to your fireplace area or mantle.
