Purchased from a very affluent estate in West Texas this piece is known as San Ildefonso Pueblo pottery and was crafted by renowned artist Juanita Pena. Juanita produced pottery in the 1930s-1940s and was known for her thickly thrown pots and carved designs while her husband Antonio Pena was known for his amazing finishes on pottery. Of the three artists with the last name of Pena, Juanita is the most sought after by collectors. This piece was most likely originally purchased from Juanita as the owners traveled extensively through out New Mexico in the 1940s and 1950s and amassed a very important collection of Native American art; this piece has been in my personal collection for 25 years. This pot measures 6 ½ inches in diameter at the widest measurement with the base measuring 2 ¾ inches and the opening measuring 4 ¼ inches, the pot is little over ¼ inch in thickness allowing the wonderful Kiva design to be carved in the pot and the condition is absolutely fantastic; it does not get much better than this. Truth be known this piece should be in a museum as it is an exceptional example of the artistry of Juanita Pena. I have included a photo in this listing of Juanita and her husband digging for clay.
