An Impressionist oil on canvas, laid on board, by California artist Richard Dey de Ribcowsky (1880 – 1936.) The painting depicts the sun setting on sailboats moored in the Grand Canals of Venice during a 19th century Historical Regatta. The fiery colors suggest a warm day with a brilliant sun peeking through clouds. In the background one can distinguish the outline of Santa Maria della Salute and St. Mark’s Basilica.

Richard Dey de Ribcowsky was born in Bulgaria in 1880, and at the young age of 13, began his art studies in Paris. He continued to paint throughout Italy and Russia traveling as far away as Buenos Aires and settling there around 1900, where he founded the Academy of Beaux Artes. He finally moved to Los Angeles, California where he remained. However he regularly traveled to Europe, and while there, resumed old acquaintances and continued to paint both his landscapes and portraits. His paintings reveal a deep fascination with the effects light plays on water. His “reflex style” showcases the way natural light bounces off surrounding objects and illuminates them to produce a naturally brilliant palette.

This painting reveals Ribcowsky’s talent for using light to showcase an otherwise typical everyday scene using vibrant colors against a stunning background. It is artist signed in the lower left hand corner and dated '28 for 1928. It is in good condition with minor surface crazing; size of frame 34 ½” H x 44 ¼” W, size of image 29 ½” H x 39 ¼” W.
