1800 Ca. Ivory Portrait Miniature of Emperor Napoleon

An exquisite, early 19th century, mixed media, miniature portrait on ivory of a newly crowned Emperor Napoleon. This miniature portrait is typical of the work done by such esteemed French artists as Isabey and Augustin. It is not signed, but it is very clear that this painting was done in remembrance of the coronation.

The image features a softly detailed portrait of the fledgling emperor with a laurel wreath on his head, a ruff, and a draped cravat around his neck. An ermine collar showcases a necklace of gold eagles from which hangs the National Order of The Legion of Honor Cross.

The portrait is set into a fabulous pierced bronze frame embellished with turquoise paste beads. This is a painting of extremely high quality, obviously done by a seasoned artist of immense talent. It is in excellent condition with a few minor scratches, protected by glass; size of frame 5 ¼” H x 4” W, size of oval image, 3 ¼” H x 2 ½” W.
