Watercolor and gouache painting on paper, 20 3/4" by 32 1/2" inside the mat (37" by 50" as framed), signed at lower right by noted well listed American 19th century artist Edmund Darch Lewis. Lewis was a prolific artist. He worked in both oil and watercolor. Auction records have exceeded $30,000 for his finest oils. I once saw one oil of a tropical landscape in Cuba, in the Hudson River tradtion, priced at $25,000, and that was too low. His style became somewhat looser as he aged. The present watercolor is dated 1901. It shows a mill with water wheel, a creek or small lake, and a tree, and another structure in the distance. The painting has been in its present frame for a very long time (glass is wavy, etc.), and it was backed by wood boards which over time have leached their acid into the paper, discoloring it in two vertical strips, most visible in the top half of the painting. Otherwise, condition is very good. Professional treatment could possibly lighten the strips. Due to the size of this painting and frame, shipping could be a challenge. Email me to discuss. Shipping wizard figures should be considered a guesstimate. SEE HUNDREDS OF OTHER PAINTINGS IN MY SHOP.
