This is a six gallon salt glaze stoneware butter churn, measuring 19" high by 10" diameter. I'm no specialist in stoneware and crocks from New York and the New England states but estimate the age as circa 1870's or 1880's. It has a 9" meandering crack from top lip down (see images) and an old (already dirty, looks like it's been like that forever) gouge out of the lip as well. Abused, misunderstood, and discarded, I found this sad survivor used as a trash receptacle outside a motel near San Francisco, crammed with empty beer cans and cigarette butts!! Forgive its flaws and appreciate its still evident primitive charm and flavor of a simpler time. Shipping wizard figures are guesstimates. SEE HUNDREDS OF WORKS OF ART NOW IN MY SHOP.
