Victorian Child's Gaudy Welsh Staffordshire Tea Set

OYSTER

Charles Allerton & Sons Staffordshire, England c. 1890

This is a lovely miniature child's tea set, circa 1890. It is hand decorated in the quirky, ever popular Gaudy Welsh Oyster pattern, with a brilliant cobalt blue, iron red orange and pink lustre.

The pieces are perfect miniature replicas of an adult-sized tea service made in similar Aesthetic transferware patterns. The serving pieces are octagonal in shape. The set totals 15 pieces and is comprised of a TEAPOT with 5 1/2" tall ~~SUGAR with lid 4 1/2" tall~~WASTE BOWL 2 1/2" tall~~TWO CUPS 2 1/8" tall~~FOUR SAUCERS 4 1/4" in diameter, and SIX PLATES 5" in diameter.

The Oyster pattern, influenced by the hand painted Gaudy work of the artisans in Wales, was made by Charles Allerton & Sons, a pottery manufactory in the Staffordshire region of England in the mid-to-late19th century who was well known for his whimsical children's transferware tea sets.

The set is in fairly good condition considering it has been well played with by generations of children. Offered as is, this is a great opportunity to buy a hard to come by set with years of life left in it. There is a chip on the rim of the teapot and a couple of nibbles on the underside of the lid. One handle of the sugar pot has been broken and some of the glaze has chipped off near the handle, on the bottom and a couple of places on the body of the piece. It has spoon dings on the inside of the sugar's lid. The waste bowl has a spider line on the bottom and tow shallow flakes on the inside rim. There are no chips, cracks or repairs on the cups, saucers and plates. The set has a few of the typical minor manufacturing imperfections found in children's wares of this era, original to the making, adding to the authenticity and the naive charm. Even with its flaws, its still a good example of this hard to come by folk art.

Miniature tea sets and early table wares in gaudy patterns are hard to find and highly sought after! This will make a stunning addition to any collection of children's dishes, and would also make a fantastic and unique doll house accessory.
