Fantastic Taxco Mexico signed Melecio Rodriguez pre-eagle mark (1930s) Sterling Silver cufflinks, etched with the plateau and Pyramid at Chichen Itza, Mexico and then inlaid with stunning Concha Shell (Abalone)! The biggest building in the Chichen Itza complex is the gigantic pyramid of "El Castillo", engraved on the front of the links . Not only is there the outer pyramid, dedicated to the Wind God, but there's also an inner pyramid that you can go into. There are snake heads at the bottoms of the main stair set, as the Wind God was part snake, part bird. On the two equinoxes, the sides of the pyramid cast shadows along those stairs and it looks like a snake is slowly climbing down from Heaven to earth. Thousands of people visit the site each equinox to watch this astronomical event happen. Melecio Rodriguez was considered to be one of the most revered Master Silversmiths in early Taxco history, working for the Rancho Alegre studio for much of his career. Both cufflinks are stamped with his known & confirmed slightly stylized block letter 'MR' signature (as well as 'Sterling-925), and the craftsmanship is breathtaking, detailed and PERFECT. The patina on the back of the links is quite heavy, although light on the posts. It has beautifully and lightly settled in the etched design on the front, adding power to an already incredible work of art. Highly collectible and RARE, this set of cufflinks measure 7/8" across the face and are in Excellent condition--no flaws or damage at all, despite being nearly 80 years old!
