Thank You for a successful inaugural year on Ruby Lane - Wishing you and yours the very best in 2009!
The pewter conical lid is embossed with detail and a rounded finial. The thumblift is curved, attaching a handle that blends into the tree trunk of the stein.
The inscription reads: “Dem Froh lichen zecher den vollen becher.” Loosely translated: “The revelers happily laughed at the full goblet.”
A bit of History. The word stein is a shortened form of Steinzeugkrug, which is German for stoneware jug or tankard. A stein is a covered drinking vessel with origins in the 14th century. As a result of bubonic plague and several fly invasions in Europe thereafter, Germany passed a law requiring that all food and beverage containers be covered to protect their contents. In a smart design, combing a lid with a hinge and thumblift, the stein could be opened and closed with the use of one hand.
