19th century Staffordshire and Aesthetic Transferware ~ Layaway Available!
Fontaine / Aesops Fables ~ RABBIT & TURTLE
Brown Westhead and Moore Potteries
Staffordshire England ~ c. 1880
This is a superb and quite scare transferware plate registered around 1880. The plate measures 10 3/8 " in diameter. The plate is finely potted. The decoration is based on a woodcut etching from the highly coveted Nature series made by Brown Westhead and Moore, most commonly found on architectural tiles. It is decorated in a brilliant cobalt blue.
The central image features a Hare or Rabbit bounding towards the finish line as the Tortoise or Turtle and a Blackbird mock him for his folly. The fable:
Once upon a time there was a fable about a race between a turtle and a rabbit. The rabbit was so much faster than the turtle. During the race, the rabbit had a tremendous lead and decided to take a nap before finishing the race. When the rabbit woke up, the turtle had won the race.
Lesson: In life there are those that have a greater advantage than others. The greater advantage might allow them to win a race. But just like the turtle, happiness is determined by achieving one's own individual goal.
The plate is in EXCELLENT condition, with no chips, cracks, hairlines or repairs. The images are clear and crisp with intricate detail and whimsical styling. The plate was made with great attention to detail. This fantastic transferware plate will make a gorgeous addition to any serious collection of Aesthetic movement wares and would be a fabulous gift for rabbit / turtle collectors.
